JAY-Z leaving his Def Jam President Role – Rapper and hip-hop mogul Jay-Z will not be renewing his contract as President of Def Jam records. The contract expires December 31, 2007. “…time for me to take on new challenges,” says Jay-Z who will continue his career as an artist and owner of Roc-A-Fella records, which is owned by Def Jam. This may be good timing to avoid the lashing that may come from Nas’ new “n—gr” album coming out under Def Jam in 2008.
FLOETRY – Remixed?! The London-bred duo Floetry has replaced Natalie Stewart (spoken word poet) with another artist Amanda Diva, also a poet and emcee of New York. The switch caught fans off guard and was taken sourly by some and welcomed by others. Marsha Ambrosius, the songstress, remains in the group. Sources say that Natalie chose to the leave the group and that Amanda Diva was asked to replace her. Amanda Diva has since launched her solo career with a new album on iTunes. She comes from a unique background of journalism, Def Jam Poetry, hip-hop, and also sports a Masters’ degree from Columbia.
Big Boi of the multi-grammy winning group Outkast has announced a solo release this upcoming year with an album titled Sir Luscious Left Foot. Big Boi is expecting to drop the album with at least 12 tracks near the beginning of 2008. Sade and Organized Noize are among some of the featured guests
Erykah Badu is set to release her next album late February on her birthday. Her current single “Honey” is available on iTunes and audible on YouTube. She is in the process of shooting the video which should be released in January 2008. The album New Amerykah is scheduled for official release on her birthday in February.
Common is off to a good start in Hollywood with another movie coming up in February 2008 titled “Wanted” where he stars alongside Angelina Jolie. Common’s list of movies to date include Smokin’Aces, American Gangster, and also rumors say Common has landed the role of “Green Lantern” in a popular comic book sci-fi movie.
