Jay Anthony Brown: Clown or Comedian
by Nathaniel Gadsden

What is your take on Jay Anthony Brown, the side-kick, on the Tom Joyner Show? Is he a clown or a comedian? I personally find him to be a flat out clown who simply goes too far, way too often. Take Kwanzaa for example. Mr. Brown goes above and beyond the call of duty to inform the vast Tom Joyner Audience that he is not celebrating Kwanzaa this year or any other year, because it is boring. He stated, that no one goes to the Kwanzaa candle lighting ceremonies because they are not fun. On the December 14th show, he created a song for one of his “Jay Anthony Brown Murders the Hits” segment, which featured the Seven Days of Kwanzaa. The tune is the same as the 12 days of Christmas. Mr. Brown pokes fun at the celebration as meaningless and boring. He concludes by telling the listening audience that he won’t be attending no boring Kwanzaa programs this year or the next. Tom Joyner seems to take great delight in telling the audience that he knows why Kwanzaa has not caught on. He agrees with Mr. Brown that the celebration needs a good song like a Christmas Choral.

The sad part about Jay Anthony Brown is that he is paid by Tom Joyner to be a buffoon, and it is a role that he greatly embraces. He will make fun of the “Black History Moments” presented on the show. He will have something negative to say about important Civil Rights Events, such as the Jena Six case, just to get a laugh. He appears to have no idea that while he does his “Court Jester” routine, he is helping millions of African Americans to stay stuck in the Valley of Despair. He helps us to de-value our history, our leaders, and one another. He doesn’t have a glue and he is happy to be clue less.

I was very disappointed with Tom Joyner when I first heard Jay Anthony Brown do his “Are these Chains Off?” rant. He claims to do this once a year to get it out of his system. If you have never heard it, good for you. It is a very toxic and dangerous piece of crap, pretending to be comedy. During this routine, Mr. Brown tells the kind of “black jokes” that a white person could not tell in a public setting. Oh but thank God, Mr. Brown to the rescue. He allows himself the luxury of telling a string of one liners, that should have no place in a progressive Black Mind, but he is able to say it because he is neither progressive or mindful. He is a Clown and proud of it. Why shouldn’t he be? Jay Anthony Brown is paid 200 times better than the average hard working American, Black or White, to be a buffoon on a very popular radio show. The fact that this show is suppose to represent the forward progress of our people is not the point. Entertainment is the point. It doesn’t matter that we are hindering the progress of our people. The Tom Joyner Show is the most widely listened to black radio show in the world. Tom Joyner donates as much or more money to Black Colleges than any one on the planet. Tom Joyner supports Black causes and interviews everyone that’s anyone of note. He even gives the “common man” a voice. So what is the problem? In my opinion it is the two step. Without the clown show as the main attraction would Tom Joyner be on the air. I don’t think so. Jay Anthony Brown becomes the necessary evil, I guess. We can take one step forward, as long as we are willing to take two steps backward. Jay Anthony Brown delivers the two step better than anyone in the business.

I agree with the article. I don't think enough people demand intelligent radio though. For that, we have to tune to 900AM.

FYI - the Tom Joyner show is owned by ABC, which is owned by Disney. Their only obligation is to their shareholders. Maybe if we bought stock in some of these companies, then maybe we'd have a voice they'd listen to.

I like talk radio, but I do agree that there is some mixture of cooning and shock mixed in with a lot of contemporary channels.

These days folks are desperate for listeners so everything is game...even selling ones soul for a laugh
