| When checking out at stores, do you: 1) Hand the money to the cashier or 2) Slide it on the counter? I often take sliding the money on the counter thing as disrespect. What about you????? |

| I prefer placing it hands without touching too much, but I'm not offended either way as long as they give me my $ and its the right amount. |

| i generally put money in hands. however, i do understand how people working behind the counter don't want to touch everybody's hands. after doing that all week, imagine how many hands you would've touched! personally, i kinda like the money slides that give you your change. _________________ Sawubona.

| I was a supermarket cashier for 4 years between high school and college and even at the zoo. My co-workers and I always felt disrespected when someone put the money on the counter especially when you had your hand out. One of my co-workers, from Ethiopia, would always get angry when that happened and she would practically throw their change back onto the counter. And she made sure that she gave them more nickels and pennies to make them get the point. So I always put the money in their hand. But since I pay with a debit card anyway, that rarely happens. _________________ THIMK and grow rich...in consciousness!

| i prefer the money in my hand without too much touching. i give money to the cashier's hand as well, without touching. the not touching is about germs. the "in the hand" is about not insulting someone. but like vincent, i use plastic so much, it hardly matters anymore. |

as i cashier, if you see my hand out but still decide to put the money on the counter thats one thing. Secondly i feel disrespected when you have your hand out expecting your change to be in your hand.
i use similar tactics as your co-worker did. i tend to give them canadian change back. (dirty glares usually come with that also.) |

i was a cashier (been one many times), and understood that people had preferences about their hands being touched so once i got used to it, i didn't mind if they put their money on the counter for me to pick up. i had to get used to it because sometimes i thought people didn't want to touch me because i'm' black. it works both ways, with cashiers putting money on the counter instead of your hand because they don't want to touch you ('cause you're black).
but i don't think you should feel disrespected if someone puts their hand out for change. gently drop the change into their palm without touching their palm. put the dollars down first without touching, and then put the change on top of the dollars. it's not hard, and putting the money on the counter when someone has their hand out, or giving them funky change is mean and petty. putting your hand out for change is innocent habit for a lot of people who don't mean anything disrespectful by it. some people do it primarily because they want to prompt the cashier to not disrespect THEM by putting the change on the counter.
regarding cashiers touching a lot of hands - if they're touching the money, they're touching the germs. regardless of whether or not you touch customers' hands, your own hands are nasty from handling money by the end of the shift. i know that first hand. so it doesn't make much difference in cleanliness if you use the counter or hand-to-hand. unless you wear gloves. then it really doesn't make a difference. |

| Different folks have different preferences, so I wouldn't feel disrespected just because someone doesn't do it the way I want. However, as with many things in life, it's not just what you do, it's how you do it. If I'm waiting with my hand out for change and someone plops it down on the counter while not even paying attention to me, I'd feel disrespected. If someone has their hand up in my face waiting for their money, I'd feel disrespected. I think you can tell when someone's going with their preference v.s. not considering you. |

ahhh, this is true. but you'd be surprised how funny some people are with their preferences and paranoia. i've seen people come to restaurants with their own cups because they didn't want to "drink after someone else", but then they would use the restaurant silverware in a heartbeat. i've also seen people put plastic gloves on to handle money--then take them off to clear dirty dishes from tables. i've stopped trying to find any logic in any of it.
most of the time for me, i can tell when people are being disrespectful as opposed to just aloof or germ-concerned. _________________ Sawubona.

| Just thinking about the cash registers that spit the change out and the grocery store self check outs....our preferences might not matter in 5 years. We'll be dealing with machines...except for in mom-and pop stores...and maybe corner store eateries |

| here i am - all late and wrong with my 2 cents. but, i place money in the cashier's hand and i EXPECT them to give me my change the same way. (sorry varr$ity but i will stand there with my hand out until they get it, they can either hold up their line or place it in my hand. ) if i gave it to you in your hand, give it back to me in mine. i think it's disrespectful to place it on the counter. When my children pay and throw the money on the counter, i have taken the money out of the cashier's hands, given it back to my kids, and made them hand it to the cashier. i then apologize to the cashier for taking so long. i'm a germaphobe but damn, you're touching the money right? that's dirtier than the cashier's hands. i've been a cashier and waitress and have always given good service so i expect the same and will act out if i don't get it. i agree with glory, there's a way to do it so everyone is happy. _________________ alyson...

| I've heard that in many Asian cultures it is considered rude to place money in another person's hand. The etiquette is to place it on the counter/table/... and slide it towards them. Who knows- coulda been some he said-she said. _________________ Live until you die
