The thread begins here...is that title ok? Let me know if you have another thread name and I'll change it.

Some starter questions, pick any to respond to:

- What lessons did you read about in the bible that you apply to everyday life, your own life?

- do you have a modern language bible or the old version (King James) with "thou, shalt," and words like that in it

What was the first book you read in the bible? Was there a specific reason for reading that book?

-Any favorite books? Why?

-Have you read the whole bible?

- Do you go to church? regularly?

- If you read the Bible as a child / teen, does it have a different feel to it as an adult?

The story that I learned a lot about Divine Order, and karma was the story about Joeseph. Where he was the youngest in the family and he was always talking about the things he dreamed about at night. Naively, he told his older brothers about some dream he had that symbolized them bowing down to him. They got mad at him and sold him into slavery when they had all went out to run an errand for their father.

During that time he was imprisoned and there was a man in jail with him who also dreamed things. Joseph would interpret the dreams. Then the man got out of jail and told the Pharoah / or some king about Joseph..(because the king was also having dreams and no one could interpret them). They let Joseph out just to interpret the dreams and then Joseph become the kings right hand man (for interpreting the dream as a fore-warning about a coming famine).

So during the famine, Joseph's brothers came looking for food. They didn't recognize Joseph in all his new royalty and they bowed down to him asking for food (this was the premonition he dreamed years ago...now manifesting). He gave them a surplus of food and later revealed his identity, and the story goes on.

This story was so incredible to me because it showed me a couple of things:

  1. Everything happens for a reason
  2. You are where are supposed to be at every moment.
  3. Things at this very second are happening and needed for critical things that will unfold in the future
  4. Be careful how you treat people, you never know who will be decision hand feeding you tomorrow.
  5. You never know how God is using you for a greater purpose...sometimes you have to go through some major trials

i've begun to realize through reading the bible that God often used humble people to carry out his messages and prophecies. ive also seen proof that if God is going to use you for something according to His will He will have His way!
take the prophets for example. when they recieved "the call" not all of them fell to their knees in submission to God's plan for them. some of these chosen prophets tried to decline God's assignment because of their feelings of inadequacy, immaturity or lack of education and fear. it was a real smack in the face to rabbis and kings to be challenged by shepperds, carpenters, fishermen and farmers. the visions and warnings they predicted put them at odds with powerful dynasties and had them jailed and in some cases murdered.
(Isaiah, one of the most prolific writers in the bible is quoted more times than any author in the Old Testament. He was cut in half when his prophecy didnt please a king.)
i believe also (and this is jus me thinking) that Jesus & the Disciples with Him weren't the calm and peaceful type of brothers when they went about their Father's business. Jesus Himself flipped over tables in the temple. You couldnt be soft and do that. They were aggressive and determined ryders for God. and we all know sometimes you gotta go buck to get free.

i read the New International Version (some folks call it the N.I.V.). I usually cross reference with The KJV. The N.I.V. helps because it translates into "modern english". plus the NIV has a lot of study guides, and explanations into things a person might miss in the text. Once again, I cross reference with the KJV as well as study partners.

I think He does this so you can be a living example to others of how good His love is. Of how you can change and overcome life trials. Kind of like how recovering addicts make the best drug counselors.

word.

I didn't know Isaiah was cut in half? wow.
Isn't it amazing how God works through the humble hearted? I think that's beautiful.

Where are the prophets of today? Are they out there? Would they even make the news?

Do people think they are crazy?

?

i learned this from the NIV. before each book there is a summary where the mindset of the author is featured. there are sections where a scripture is set aside and disected to help the reader understand the full meaning . it s a good tool for someone who is looking for more clarity in their bible study but cant grasp the language of the KJV.
there are many "study" bibles out there. i have had this NIV for about 13 years. if it wasnt for this book...

If somebody hates all the "thous" the Living Word version is a good one, too. I have a KJV and a Living Word version. I prefer both to the NIV.

The first book I remember reading all the way through was Genesis 'cause it was in the front. LOL! Then I started to skip around. I really really like Romans. It lays out the gospel in a very inspiring and empowering way. I haven't read the whole bible, and I probably won't, because I'm not going to be reading stuff like genealogies and old Mosaic laws. I do go to church, but not regularly, and I've been dragging my feet on finding a church home. The Bible doesn't really feel any different to me now that it did when I was a child or teen.

PostSubject: Re: GOT BIBLE? (discussions, questions, lessons, etc)   Fri Oct 17, 2008 11:43 am

A co-worker (God bless her) gave me a Life Applications bible (after I told her about my impatience with the thous, shalts, lol). I love it! I had it for almost a year before I decided to start reading it last year. It has summaries, explanations, bios on each person...and so on.

The first book I read straight through (as an adult) was Job. I was having a lot of odd luck. I felt like in order to prevent misfortunes...my best bet was to stand still in a closet somewhere. I tried staying in the house once and my parked car got a ticket because the club slipped and pressed on the horn for a few hours (noise violation $100+)...ANYWAY, i had to stop and say what was going on...what was on this odd luck about?

I turned to the bible...opened it up randomly to any page and it was the beginning of Job. Read that straight through and was hooked and humbled. A while later, I read all the books that documented the life of Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Peter, Luke, and so on - I stopped at Acts). Then I went back and started at the beginning (Genesis) and read it straight through to Jeremiah..I've been on Jeremiah for awhile, but I just started reading it again.

It feels a lot different to me now than when I was a child. I read Revelations when I was a teen. I have had some life experiences to help me better understand the bible now as an adult. Right away, I appreciate the cycles of life, the highs and lows...and the shaping of persons character through various experiences - I appreciate and recognize these things a lot more now.

I don't go to church (and I don't know if I plan to be a member any time soon...I just can't take ministers with pricey lifestyles seriously - sorry). Once in a while, I go to "the hour of power" (Church service in Center City...during lunch hour).

I have respect for other beliefs and religions and practices and whatever makes someone a better human being.

***I remember when I was going to a student orientation at Temple Univ...this girl I met told me her father told her, "whatever you do, don't get in a discussion about religion or politics" ...something about it divides people when they discuss it. I've noticed that. I'm hoping that we don't go there...and if we do...hope we can come back. Its all peaceful now, but I'm just remembering her wisdom

***also, Damali (believe it or not) suggested that I read the bible...because of some of the dreams I was having. And the crazy thing is, working with him as a producer, and so on...this was the most valuable advice he ever gave me

* I would have to say that I definitely favor the KJV! I think that some of the translations, for lack of a better phrase, "over-translate" the text. There are so many different sects that have translations and different rituals that are germane to their sect that I'd rather just read KJV. I think it offers less confusion. I have a Bible Dictionary that I use and it tells you what each book is about, who almost every person in the Bible is, and various other terms or importance. I find that very helpful in terms of finding meaning, other than surface stuff.

* I haven't read the entire Bible. The first book I read in full was Revelations. At that time I hadn't been a church goer at all, so it was very intimidating and confusing to say the least. Now when I read it, it definitely has new meaning. My favorite book is Proverbs. A book of wisdom. Maybe it's the poet in me, or maybe just the logic. I feel like when I read Poverbs, I'm talking to a grandmother or a grandfather. My grands passed when I was a tot, maybe that's why the book touches me so much. I think that's the most straight foward book in the Bible. If I'm actually looking for something to speak to me in that moment or situation, I do like Tizzy, I pray and then flip it open to wherever it falls. Never fails, the chapter I come to always helps in my situation. It might say something I don't want to hear, but it's always applicable.

*As a child I only went to church on Easter. Got saved in college and went like every Sunday. Life changed, so did I, and I stopped going. I think church can be intimidating when you are having an internal struggle, but it can also be refreshing! I go when I can now. Not opposed to going though.

i agree. when there's something that I believe puts me in oposition with what I believe God's plan to be, I tend to pray less. Some people will attend church services less often when they are dealing with something. It's funny though, I learned that times like these are when youre supposed to pray harder! I find that small seed of doubt can be a weed binding a worshipper up, choking your praise.
I remember in the past being in church and seeing people praying with their hands outstretched or standing, clapping, shouting with no concern for the folks around them. God was in the midst and it was like they were reaching for Him, dancing with Him and I wanted so badly to lift my hands towards the One who I know I owe everything. the Spirit was calling me and I knew it.
But i wasnt livin right.
And something in that small part of my heart made me believe that I wasnt worthy to approach God. Not then. As my understanding increased so did my outlook on who was acceptable to worship. i dont know if thats similar to what you meant but it can be a multi layered, deceptive way for the enemy to steal your joy.

worst trick in the book. i think most folks have been there. in my understanding, that is what grace and mercy are for. but like adam calling himself hiding in the garden, it never works to run away from your spiritual lifeline when things get sticky. at some point, we have to deal with the stickiness.

Question - The situation with Solomon...just clarifying...he was given the opportunity to have anything that he wanted and he chose wisdom. The wisdom made him wealthy (?) and then he hit a low point (did he lose it all?) and then that's where the book of Proverbs comes from - his notes on wisdom from having went through some things?

I'm trying to make sure I remember it correctly...

This one I read today in the Life Applications:

"You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket . Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand where it gives light to everyone in the house"
Matthew 5:13-14

I took this to mean if you have gift, teachings...let it shine, let it shine. They were meant to shine, don't sit on it or put it under a basket.

The reading I came into this morning was:

Proverbs 9:7-9

Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return
Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt.
So don't bother correcting mockers.
they will only hate you
but correct the wise,
and they will love you
instruct the wise
and they will be even wiser
teach the righteous
and they will learn even more
