Wired magazine is a great one for people with a geeky side. They cover technology, science, and related topics, but in a way that's accesible even if you don't know a bunch of jargon and how to read schematics.

There are three really good magazines for people into writing/producing different forms of electronic music (including hip-hop). Unfortunately they are published in England, so a year subscription over here is really expensive. The mags are:
Computer Music
MusicTech
Future Music (there is an American version of this one, but even though it's by the same publishing company, it's a completely different magazine)

i grew up reading ebony and jet, but i don't read them anymore. then in school, i read essence and us news and world report (that was me trying to understand the world outside of the hood a little better).

now i read heart & soul and black enterprise. and sometimes i peek in the magazines my farao reads.

Poets and Writers is the only magazine I ANTICIPATE. that once every 2 months thing kills me with them though! i love reading about writers and their processes. also, like to be up to date on publishing news.

Harper's I don't know why I've slept on it all this time. it's hilarious. they publish real excerpts that are funny as hell. like a letter George Bush, Sr. sent to his wife Barb when he was running against Mike (and his wife Kitty) Dukakis that read:

Sweetsie:
Please look at how Mike and Kitty do it. Try to be closer in, more--well, er, romatic--on camera. I am practicing that loving look, and the creeping hand. Yours for better TV and more demonstrable affection.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo.
Love ya,
G.B
.

They also published a letter from a former slave to his former owner, who had written to request this "good" slave come back to the south and work for him as a paid employee. it was an elegantly written letter that stated in a roundabout way that the former owner could kiss his black ass.

Budget Travel and National Geographic Traveler

O Magazine (occasionally)

Tokion mag is sooooo cooool! Cool i get all the obscure group news and artist news. sometimes it is way out there. sometimes it's not.

Poets and Writers. (I feel ya April)
I once was a fan of the source and xxl.
They no longer have many articles on people whom i'm interested in.
Both mags are watered down. Mostly ads.

I'm really into magazine reading now...especially when waiting for the train.

I read both fashion mags and science and tech mags.

I used to be really into Essence but when they changed owners...the feel of the articles changed...its starting to get back to the good feel i remember...

but anyway, I like:

For Fashion & Relationship stuff

Cosmopolitan *this magazine is funnnny sometimes, the confessions...
Essence
Glamour
Style
Lucky
Vogue
Black Hair

For Science & Tech & Music gadgets
Scratch (THIS MAGAZINE IS DOPE!)
Wired (just started...big fan)
PC World
Consumer Report
and some other ones that I randomly pick up

I also read odd stuff like
Psychology Today
Home Decor

I do read XXL, Vibe, Source here and there, mostly the cover stories everything else is catered to folks locked up it seems (soft porn). And I also read Sister 2 Sister

I bought 2 magazines yesterday:

Wired
Oxygen (I really wanted Fitness but they didn't have it)
****trying to motivate myself to get back to exercising regularly. I figured if I read about it enough, it can actually happen.

I just bought this magazine called "The Scientific American Mind"

The cover story headlines are:

Why we kiss: Secrets that lips reveal

Moral Mind: Reason VS. Emotion

The Corporate Psychology of Good and Evil (***They did a story comparing Enron management style VS Google's management style)

Bounce with life's Bumps: Roots of Resilience

The Time Machine: Inside Your Head

Easing a Fear of Flying.

****I like picking up magazines that I never heard of...good stuff.
(**I just thought of a Simpons' episode where Homer was talking to some famous man known for his intellect and Homer said "I can't believe someone I never heard of is having a conversation with me") lol

I just started reading Black Enterprise. The January 2009 issue is pretty good. At first, I overlooked this magazine, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. I'm going to subscribe.

The stories in the January issue that I read so far deal with young entrepreneurs that own their own businesses...may have had humble beginnings...but they weathered. The one entrepreneur is only 27, lives in Bristol PA...her business is worth over $2 million.

There's another story about a former Olympic star who tells how he went from a lavish lifestyle to a very simple lifestyle (when the money dried up).

Then when I ride the train home, I'm going to read this story about the home mortgage blame game in the economy. They seem to really get to the bottom of it in a way that makes you wonder if it was fair for the media to point the fingers at blacks as a blame for the economy problems.

*this is a good magazine that inspires you to get on your grind and manifest
