PostSubject: Reading any new books?   Fri May 22, 2009 4:40 pm

I'm currently reading Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing by Caroline Myss. It's really, really good. She discusses her views on the exchange of energy and our power to heal ourselves or maintain our physical health, chakra health, etc.

Harlem's Glory: Black Women Writing, 1900-1950. Edited by L.E. Roses and R.E. Randolph. I think it's one of the buncha books I bought at the Harlem Book Fair a few years ago when we took our road trip.

right now: when we were gods. it's about cleopatra. i haven't really gotten into it fully because i have a feeling that once i do, i won't be able to put it down. i'm purposely reading slowly until the weekend.

i have The secret language of birthdays : personology waiting for me at the library.

then, i'm going to read one of the books i just bought alyssa: the mysterious Benedict Society.

i'm also trying to read the bible more. a client gave me a bunch of pocket bibles today (psalms and proverbs), so i have one in my pocketbook and extras if anyone wants one.

so many books, so little time.

I just finished reading The Time Machine and The Invisible man by H. G. Wells (Gotta love B&N classics!)

The Time Machine was decent and The Invisible Man was a great read.

Just bought the book and the clerk says, "you are the third person to come in for this book today during this hour. It must be popular again, or there must be some special promotion about it"

I just wanted it. Actually wanted to cop it yesterday. Looking forward.

(I didn't know it was considered a book of poetry...found in the "popular poetry" section)

Tray the Prophet is an amazing book with beautiful insights on alot of different aspects of life. i believe you will enjoy it. it's one of my faves. after i read the Prophet i went out and bought this massive compilation of his works and was not disappointed in the least. He is AMAZING! I learned about him from listening to Saul Williams. I do this thing where I buy work from my favorite artists favorite artist. You know the people who inspired them to do the work they do. I have definitely broadened my horizons by doing that. Started listening to Mariam Mkeba after I fell in love with Goapele's voice way back in the day... lol!

James Baldwin - The Price of the Ticket, A collection of short essays from 1948-1985. Very interesting to see his observations on race, culture, black artists and african americans in general. Especially during that time frame.

I bought the book... But surprisingly the entire 720 pages is posted on Google Books here --> http://books.google.com/books?id=dsauteQRd7UC&dq=The+Price+of+the+Ticket&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=L43BSv29Co3ZlAegn4HxBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4#v=onepage&q=&f=false

I'd like to pick up some Octavia Butler books. I've seen a few posts about her here. Any suggestions on which book I should start with?

I started with Lilith's brood. It was originally a trilogy, but it is combined into one volume. http://www.amazon.com/Liliths-Brood-Octavia-E-Butler/dp/B002NSLMYA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254242822&sr=8-1

I think many people start with Kindred - which is actually the only book of hers that I haven't read yet.

Seed to Harvest is another single volume originally published as seperate books http://www.amazon.com/Seed-Harvest-Octavia-E-Butler/dp/0446698903/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254242822&sr=8-4
