Daughters - Paule Marshall

What is this one about?

This book's protagonist comes from two worlds - New York's upper west side, and from Triunion, a fictional island in the Caribbean. It explores the lives of the various "daughters" born out of those experiences... you might like it, Traycee...

Did you ever finish those books that you bought at the Harlem Book Fair that time we went with Alyson?

Some yes, some no. I still haven't read some of them. There are a bunch of books I'd like to get into that I put in storage when I moved. I tried about a month ago to get them out, but they're under and behind pretty much everything else I have stored. I couldn't go last summer, but I definitely want to go again this time!

Barack Obama's The Audacity of Hope...

I wouldn't call it.. captivating.. kind of dry with it's sprinkling of colorful scenery and language. I'll finish it... Just because I want to know his angle. And i'm learning some things about politics, etc. So it's a good read. Sleep just kidding.

I am actually going through and reading the first African-American History textbook that was issued by the School District of Philadelphia. It is wonderful. I looked at it and was truly amazed. It is an awesome improvement from when I attended school. We learned about Rosa, Martin and Harriet...that's it.

On another note, someone introduced me to the author "Zane." The Sex Chronicles series is pure porn. Embarassed High school girls, however, are finding this a "great read." She has several books out, so I gave her another chance with her book entitled "Nervous." A better read, however, still very detailed sexual activity. I'm not a fan.

Glad I could introduce you to it. Someone bought it for me and I loved it. I told my sister about it and for her first book club meeting, her fellow members are going to read/analyze/dissect it.

What did you get out of it?

For me, the inherent theme was to follow your dreams (very simply put lol! ) We each have almost a responsibility to follow our dreams. And in the pursuit of our own "Personal Legends" we will find the freedom that we seek. Free of anger, jealousy, bitterness, attachment, etc. I've read other books like this, i.e. The Celestine Prophecy, but this one was short and concise. The messages were potent. And because of the fact that it was a short read, I'd parallel it to a fable.

When I was a child I felt that I had a very strong spiritual link with all that was around me ("soul of the world") As I grew older, I grew away from that spirituality. Since that time I've been on a journey back towards that connection.

From this book, I took away the importance of the journey.. toward the goal. (it's always good to see it re-iterated and emphasized Very Happy ) I was also reminded of the importance of observing the world around me. Following and paying attention to signs (or omens). Because it's all right there. And any and all answers that we seek can be found within.

I will definitely add it to my list. Thank you. Right now I'm reading "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" - Lorraine Hansberry and up next on deck... "Price of the Ticket" by James Baldwin. That book is kind of thick. So it's going to be a while.

I read this. I love Lorraine. THis book is not written by her though...its a collection of her works that she never finished, letters she received from all over the globe in response to Raisin in the Sun....and it has a lot of pictures..its like an unofficial biography.

Yeah. I'm reading it now. I know. Laughing I'm about half way finished. And I think I like it even better because of the way it was compiled. Who knows what the finished autobiography would have looked like had she done it herself.. astounding, i'm sure. However, this way is nice too.

PS - Your emphatic displeasure with the P.Diddy "A Raisin In the Sun" is what prompted me to read this book. I could see your love for her.
