| What is the longest you have been abstinent (without sex)?
Was it by choice or just wasn't happening like that?
What are your thoughts on the subject?
Any pros / cons?
Are there different types of abstinence? |

| five years by choice.
i'll never do it again, but it was what it was. it meant something to me. i stopped my quest when i realized it didn't mean what it meant when i started.
pros (for a woman, anyway) - your mind is clearer when it comes to making decisions about men.
cons - isn't that obvious?
different types? well. i guess so, b/c people mean different things by "abstinent," just like how people mean different things by "sex." |

Its two types of celibacy.
Complete celibacy is when an individual does not engage in either masturbation or interpersonal sexual contact.
Partial celibacy is when a person refrains from interpersonal sexual contact but does engage in masturbation.

When I was  in high school and college I stopped having sex during the season (or at least not so frequent)because it lingers on the mind.....when is her period coming, is she lying about being late?
I was more focused on the court when those questions didnt mentally weigh me down.
The longest was about 6 months.

| about 6 months for me. 3x in my life. getting it was not the problem. i was just refusing to give it. the 1st time i refused to sleep with my ex husband for about the last 6 months of our marriage. i wanted to see what was most important to him and CLEARLY sex was at the top of his list (along with control). it really helped me see what type of person he was and helped me make my decision.
the other 2 times, i wanted to focus on other things and didn't want the desire to fill my mind. i am most creative when i am sexually frustrated - a lot of unmasked was written during the end of my marriage.

| Hmmmm.....
First time was about a year in between my first and second boyfriend, not necessarily on purpose or by accident, but I ain't have no business having sex anyway at that age.
It wasn't until my college years that I ever had sex with someone that I wasn't in a relationship with... so I was celibate on purpose for about 5 months (that ain't sh!t).
Wow. Never really thought about it lately. Well, no reason to think about it now  |

Cool definitions.
The longest I tried PARTIAL celibacy (based on the definition above) was about 2 years. Right after college graduation. A long term relationship was ending. I was really getting clear about some things and wanted to make better choices. It resulted in me getting into the arts, deeper into my spirituality, and a decent mate came after that too.
Earlier this year, I did 40 days of COMPLETE celibacy (based on the definition above). I was focusing on some things I wanted, so I did this. It was hard. I did like the challenge. (Almost caved in though after a colonic.)  But seriously, I think this was good way to center. It seems to have spiritual and meditative benefits too.
The interesting thing is that I think both abstinence and sex (with someone you love, etc) can have similar positive results. |

The hell!?!
I barely been without since I started.
Nah on the real though the longest time for me would probably be between my  and a dude I dated before him. That was like 5 months. That was definitely by choice and not by chance.
It was good for a number of reasons. The #1 being that I knew my decisions about my weren't clouded by sex and that gave us an opportunity to gain a deeper overstanding of each other on other levels. |

18 months by choice
Pros - it helped me clear my head and get my diet down to a science when i transistioned to being vegan. also, i felt super human. I could do anything physically.
Cons - two women i dated during that time weren't feeling my philosophy. imagine that. it's usually the guy flipping out when he can't get any.
it's perfect (along with bowel cleansing and fasting) for any situation where you need to think clearly for an extended period of time and to renew/regain strength.

| 7 months, 2 weeks and 4 days. tuffest ish i ever did. it was choice. a sister played the "Im pregnant" game with me  to avoid a break up and my trust level was in the basement for awhile afterwards.
i still remember the sister who pulled me "off of the bench" and put me back in "the game." i was getting weak and trying to be strong. after a few frustrating dates with no advances past 2nd base, she asked me why.
I explained, "I told you I'm celibate."
She countered while shedding her sundress, "Well, you sell-a-bit and I'll buy a bit!"
 I was back in the game.
