If anyone is interested in joining a crusade to address the dire conditions of our communities at ground level, please bring your voice, talent, and energy to the streets as we attempt to mobilize poets, singers, musicians, rappers, dancers, and motivational speakers to move through the city actually engaging our youth in direct dialogue and action (if a cipher breaks out, so be it). not to preach, castigate, blame, or challenge, we want to have a dialogue (that means two way communication) with our youth that are being neglected socially. (the same young brothas you end up seeing on the 11:00 news). There are lots of programs with rites of passage programs and mentoring efforts, but we want to engage our youth at ground zero (on the street corner, in THEIR neighborhood, on THEIR turf). Some of our young men are falling through the cracks because most of the programs want the young men to come to them (which could be problematic if the information to participate is not filtered down to them or if they don't trust the porgram). Our plan is to simply pick out a blighted area, send some real MEN into the area to engage the youth by talking and sharing their time, energy, expertise, passion, and commitment which hopefully will encourage/motivate them to look at other options. We can communicate with them through our artistry as well (not to perform, but to share). But the most important task is to ask questions and listen AND LEND OURSELVES TO THEIR LIVES. We often take to the stage with our politics, culture and communal philosophy on display, but now the time is at hand to put our money where our mouth is to effect change.
